Cruise Ship Passenger Dies After Driving Mobility Scooter Off Pier in the Bahamas
Police say the 88-year-old woman lost control of her mobility scooter, and an autopsy is planned after she died despite onboard treatment.
An 88-year-old American woman died after driving her mobility scooter off a pier at Celebration Key in the Bahamas on Saturday, prompting The Royal Bahamas Police Force to launch an investigation.
Police believe the woman lost control of her scooter and drove off the pier, striking her head against the ship's hull before entering the water.
Crew members retrieved the passenger from the water and transported her to the ship's medical facility for emergency treatment; despite resuscitation efforts, she did not survive.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death as police continue investigating the suspected drowning incident.
Recently, the cruise industry has faced negative press, including a fatal balcony fall and a 16-year-old charged with murder, while USA Today reported the Carnival Cruise ship was on an Eastern Caribbean voyage.
