Amazon Fire TV Device Will Be Remotely Removed in a Matter of Weeks and No Longer Work

Amazon will remotely disable the Fire TV Blaster on January 31 and offer full refunds plus recycling and discounts on the Fire TV Cube, citing diminished demand due to newer tech.

  • On January 31, Amazon will end support for the Fire TV Blaster, and the company emailed owners warning the device will stop working in the coming weeks.
  • Launched just over six years ago, the Fire TV Blaster has been phased out as Amazon stopped selling it last year and said HDMI-CEC technology reduced its necessity.
  • Using infrared, the Blaster sent remote-style commands to TVs, soundbars and satellite boxes and enabled hands-free voice control when paired with Fire TV sticks and Echo smart speakers, but no current Fire TV product includes a built-in infrared blaster.
  • To soften the change, Amazon will automatically apply a 34.99 gift card to UK customer accounts, and customers can recycle Blasters with Amazon Recycling program labels.
  • Amid a broader anti-piracy push, Amazon is blocking apps and tightening controls, stepping up efforts to block so-called 'dodgy' Fire TV Sticks with Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment and police raids on piracy operations, marking the first time a fully working smart-home device is disabled.
