The New Kindle Ditches the Bezel in a Push Toward a Smaller, Lighter E-Reader
The refreshed lineup adds thinner designs, longer battery life and new color options, with Paperwhite and Colorsoft models starting at $200 and $290.
- On Thursday, Amazon introduced a refreshed Kindle lineup featuring a new 6-inch base model, a 7-inch Kindle Paperwhite, and a 7-inch Kindle Colorsoft with a bezel-free, flush-front display design.
- These updated e-readers measure 6.8mm thin and are 30 percent faster at page turns than predecessors. Amazon introduced aluminum housings for premium variants and relocated power buttons to the right edge for improved ergonomics.
- To address accidental touches on the bezel-free design, Kevin Keith, Amazon's vice president of devices, said the company uses "Cap" touch technology that detects finger position and creates a "dead zone" to prevent errors.
- Available today, the base Kindle starts at $150, while premium Signature Editions reach $320. Amazon also launched the $34.99 Kindle Click wireless remote and Kids versions priced at $180.
- This refresh precedes Kindle's 20th anniversary in 2027; leaders cited a "resurgence of reading" as momentum builds. Amazon plans to celebrate the milestone throughout the year with continued product initiatives.
