Amazon driver admits stealing cat from family's Elland garden
On Thursday, Bradford Magistrates Court sentenced Amazon delivery driver Catalin Stancu to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, for taking Nora, a family cat, from her Elland, West Yorkshire home in January.
Doorbell camera footage from January 18 revealed Stancu staring at Nora for a 'prolonged period' before taking her, leaving owner Carl Crowther 'disgusted' when he discovered the theft after she failed to return home for a meal.
Under the Pet Abduction Act 2024, Stancu pleaded guilty to 'taking a cat,' an offense reflecting that pets are more than objects. The court ordered him to pay £500 in compensation and complete 15 rehabilitation activity days.
Following the reunion on January 21, the family stated, "For four days we were left in complete uncertainty and the emotional toll on our family was overwhelming." They accepted Stancu's apology after the sentencing hearing.
District Judge Paul Marks emphasized that "the value of Nora can't be measured in pounds and pence," noting the significant distress caused to the family. The Crowthers have since built an enclosed outdoor area to protect her.
