Alonso Sees Courtois Similarities in Chelsea's Penders
- On Friday, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirmed goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez will be sidelined for a few weeks following successful jaw surgery after suffering a head injury during Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Everton.
- After colliding with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, Martinez was treated on the pitch for more than eight minutes before medics transported him to hospital.
- Replacing the injured Martinez, 21-year-old Mike Penders will step into the starting lineup, having made his debut as a substitute against Everton after 73 minutes.
- Penders is set to start in goal for Saturday's London derby against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, with Alonso confident the squad is prepared for the transition.
- Alonso acknowledged similarities between Penders and former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, saying, "He himself said he sees similarities between them," when discussing the comparison.
