Billy Slater Rules Out Storm Job After Quitting as Maroons Coach
The former fullback finished with three series wins in five attempts, and the Queensland Rugby League will soon begin its search for a replacement.
On Friday, August 14, 2026, Queensland Rugby League announced that Billy Slater will step down as head coach of the Maroons after five years in the role.
During his tenure, Slater coached the Maroons to three series wins in 2022, 2023, and 2025, finishing with eight wins and seven losses following a 2-1 series defeat to New South Wales this year.
"From being a boy who idolised this team, to a player, to guiding a group that has inspired our State, this has been one of the most rewarding things I've done in my life," Slater said, while QRL chair Brian Canavan thanked him for his contribution.
The QRL confirmed the search for a successor would soon begin, with assistants Cam Smith, Matt Ballin, and Ben Te'o looming as potential contenders for the 2027 series.
Slater's departure means two new coaches will face off next year after Matt King was announced to replace Laurie Daley at the helm of the Blues, though players like Harry Grant and Tino had initially pleaded for Slater to remain.
