Alex Smalley back in position to win at Colonial after 3rd-round lead at PGA gets away
A bogey-free 65 leaves Alex Smalley one shot behind the first-round leaders as he seeks his first PGA Tour win.
On Thursday, Alex Smalley shot a bogey-free 5-under 65 at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, placing him one shot behind six first-round leaders as he seeks his first PGA Tour victory.
Calm winds and soft greens at Colonial Country Club created scorable conditions, allowing Smalley to build on momentum from his career-best second-place finish at the PGA Championship two weeks ago.
Lee Hodges, Ryan Gerard, Andrew Putnam, Tom Kim, Matt McCarty, and reigning U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun all carded 64s to share the lead, with 31 players within two shots of the top.
"To have no bogeys on the scorecard anywhere is nice, especially here," Smalley said of the challenging layout, while Brian Harman praised the venue: "I love playing golf in Texas, man."
South Korea native and Dallas resident Tom Kim has emerged as the local favorite, as top-ranked Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth skip Colonial for the first time since becoming household names.
Alex Smalley again placed himself in a position where he aspired to win the Charles Schwab Challenge in Colonial, two weeks after the leader after the third round of the PGA Championship ended up in second place.
