Alcaraz Beats Medvedev to Reach Vienna Final
Alcaraz reached his fifth final of the year and extended his ATP 500 winning streak to 25 matches after a 96-minute victory.
Carlos Alcaraz defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 7-6 on Saturday at the Vienna Open, reaching his 37th tour-level final and extending his unbeaten ATP 500-level streak to 15 matches.
The result gave Alcaraz revenge after Medvedev handed him his first season defeat at Indian Wells in March, while also ending the Russian's seven-match winning streak.
With neither player able to gain decisive advantage, Alcaraz produced powerful groundstrokes in the tie-break to seal victory in 96 minutes, as Medvedev struggled behind his own serve.
Despite the loss, Medvedev secured his spot in the season-ending ATP Finals next month after his fifth consecutive semi-final run, as Alcaraz awaits either Alexander Zverev or Minaur.
Alexander Zverev replaces the injured Jannik Sinner at the top of the men's rankings on Monday, while both Alcaraz and Medvedev have already qualified for the season-ending ATP Finals.
Alexander Zverev loses the semi-finals in Vienna against Alex de Minaur and misses the dream final against Carlos Alcaraz. On Monday he will be number 1.
The dream final between Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz in Vienna has broken. The German world leader lost his semi-final. The German repeatedly complained about the balls. Jan-Lennard Struff missed the final in Basel.
