Justice Department Seeks to Isolate Alaska Ballots as Criminal Probe Underway over Senate Candidate
Federal prosecutors say the case could affect ballots in a race that may decide Senate control.
- On Friday, U.S. Attorney Michael Heyman confirmed the Department of Justice launched criminal and civil investigations into groups affiliated with Mary Peltola, citing a "significant surge of law enforcement assets to Alaska" following spoiler candidate recruitment reports.
- Democratic campaigners allegedly sought to recruit independent Daniel J. Sullivan to siphon votes from incumbent Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan, who appears on the ballot alongside the challenger and Peltola.
- Separately, the Justice Department sued the Alaska Division of Elections asking a judge to segregate ballots ranking Daniel J. Sullivan, claiming a "substantial risk" that the candidacy "will mislead voters and ultimately result in an electoral process that lacks integrity."
- Republican Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy ordered a state-level investigation to determine if violations occurred, while Peltola denied knowledge of the recruitment effort, stating, "I am not interested in tricking voters."
- Days before Tuesday's ranked choice general election, the race remains critical as one of a handful of contests expected to determine control of the U.S. Senate.
