Airfares rose in all 50 of the biggest U.S. metros, by as much as 25%
Some city pairs saw fares climb as much as 25% as airlines trimmed capacity and demand stayed strong, analysts said.
Average airfares climbed across all major U.S. metro areas during the most recent quarter, according to data released by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
This marks a notable increase from the previous year, when passengers faced lower costs before the recent, broad-based rise in ticket prices.
Spirit Airlines' departure accounted for approximately a single percentage point of the total increase, as the carrier withdrew from several key routes that previously offered lower prices.
While select city pairs saw price declines, the overall trend remained upward across major hubs, with the report utilizing the Department of Transportation's latest passenger ticket data.
Rising fuel costs coincided with these fare hikes, pressuring airlines to pass higher operating expenses onto passengers booking flights throughout this same period.
