Air Pollution: Indian Capital Delhi's Air Quality Worsens Ahead of Diwali Festival
Authorities are checking border vehicles and turning back non-BS-VI traffic as Delhi’s air quality worsens and Stage II curbs expand across the NCR.
On November 1, Delhi authorities implemented strict entry restrictions for non-BS-VI vehicles registered outside the capital, stationing enforcement teams at major border checkpoints to turn back non-compliant vehicles and curb escalating winter air pollution.
Deteriorating air quality, which slipped into the 'very poor' category, prompted the Commission for Air Quality Management to invoke Stage II measures under the Graded Response Action Plan with immediate effect on Monday, November 2.
Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa reported that enforcement teams checked nearly 15,000 vehicles on the first day of the Winter Action Plan, issuing 566 challans for Pollution Under Control Certificate violations and collecting Rs 68.4 lakh in penalties.
Beyond vehicle curbs, authorities mandated a 50 per cent cap on physical office attendance and banned dust-generating construction activities until November 20, aiming to prevent air quality from reaching 'severe' levels.
These fixed-term measures will remain in effect until January 31, 2027, as officials attempt to mitigate the annual winter smog crisis driven by meteorological factors, vehicular emissions, and crop residue burning in neighbouring states.
