An Air India crew member was detained in Kerala, for attempting to smuggle gold. Shafi Sharaf, a Wayanad native, had 1,487 gm of gold paste wrapped around his forearms. He intended to enter the green customs clearing lane, which is for travellers without any dutiable goods to report while hiding the gold in his shirt sleeves, as reported by ANI. "A member of the crew on an Air India Express flight IX 474 has been taken into custody following an incident involving smuggling. The said individual has been placed on suspension with immediate effect," the airline's statement read.

The arrested Air India employee was identified as Shafi -- a native of Kerala's Wayanad district. He is being interrogated further. While it is the second such instance in 2023 alone, three such busts were reported at the CIAL since 2021.
