AI Needs a Governed Path, Not a Ban, Armor Founder Tells GovWare
Drake said 47% of large organizations lack full visibility into employee AI use, making governed approval and auditability essential.
On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Armor CEO Chris Drake told GovWare 2026 attendees that CISOs should govern AI adoption rather than ban it outright. Drake argued blocking AI tools drives shadow usage and increases security risks.
Unlike the cloud transition, AI arrives through existing browsers and productivity tools without established security checkpoints, Drake noted. Organizations must now examine AI agents running on employees' machines to maintain security.
Protiviti's February 2026 survey found 47% of large organizations lack visibility into employees' AI tool usage, exposing them to fourth-party risks. Armor protects over 1,700 organizations across 40+ countries.
Before granting access, Drake urged CISOs to ask three questions: "What can it touch? Where can it send? Can we control what it does?" He emphasized they require a written mandate to approve or pause AI usage.
Armor launched its Sovereign AI platform to provide a governed work environment enabling organizations to leverage AI while maintaining compliance. Drake argued that "banning it doesn't work," highlighting the need for proactive governance over restriction.
