Shark Tagging Boost to Keep Swimmers Safe After Attacks
The funding brings WA’s shark mitigation investment to $12 million and will expand aerial surveillance, tagging and real-time alerts for swimmers.
On Tuesday, Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis announced an additional $5 million for shark mitigation in Western Australia, bringing total annual investment to $12 million ahead of summer.
The funding follows a fatal shark attack at Sorrento Beach last month and heightened predator activity after a whale carcass washed ashore at City Beach earlier this month.
Allocations include $2.3 million for helicopter surveillance, $1.2 million for beach patrols, $800,000 for tagging, $500,000 for 10 monitoring receivers, and $200,000 for AI-powered drone technology.
While Minister Jarvis dismissed calls for shark culling to protect marine ecosystems, opposition spokeswoman Kirrilee Warr urged demonstrating effectiveness before committing further funds.
With three fatal attacks recorded this year, the government will rely on upcoming CSIRO stock assessments to guide future policy while emphasizing informed beach choices.
