Over seven million hectares of agricultural land in Romania operate without irrigation, at the mercy of the weather. In Arad County, less than 2% of the cultivated area is irrigated, so in recent years, more and more farmers have replaced cereal crops with forests. By comparison, across the border, farmers in Hungary have invested in irrigation systems, which they supply with water bought paradoxically from Romania.
