The Federal Government has nominated former EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn as President of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank. He follows former Chamber of Commerce director Harald Mahrer, who had cleared the chair after massive pressure.
Johannes Hahn, former EU Commissioner, is nominated as the new President of the General Council of the Austrian National Bank. He is to follow Harald Mahrer, who had withdrawn after a wave of criticism.
From 2014 to 2024, Hahn was the Austrian EU Commissioner in Brussels, first for enlargement and neighbourhood policy, then for budget and administration.
The position of OeNB President has been vacant since 30 November after Harald Mahrer had completed his mandate as OeNB General Council President. Now Johannes Hahn is to follow. According to media reports, ÖVP has opted for him.
