Pennsylvania records a fifth measles death as the nation endures its worst year since 1991
The state reported 943 cases across 39 counties as vaccination rates fell below the level needed to prevent outbreaks.
- On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported a fifth measles-associated death as the state's outbreak reached 943 cases across 39 counties.
- Falling vaccination rates, now below the 95% coverage threshold needed to prevent outbreaks, have fueled the resurgence. Health Secretary Robert and the Trump administration have questioned vaccine safety while defunding immunization efforts.
- These are the first measles-associated deaths in Pennsylvania in 35 years. Previous fatalities included an 18-year-old in Mifflin County, a 40-year-old in Jefferson County, and two infants in Lancaster County.
- Lancaster County coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni said his office did not handle the latest death. International health officials will meet in November to determine if the country and Mexico have lost their measles-free status.
- The nation has seen eight reported measles-associated deaths in the last two years, more than the combined total of reported deaths over the previous three decades.
