Sawe's Marathon Record Boosts Adidas in 'Supershoe' Race with Nike
Sawe finished in 1:59:30 in Adidas' Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3, and shares rose 2% as the brand beat Nike to the milestone.
- On Sunday, Kenyan athlete Sabastian Sawe became the first person to complete an official marathon in under two hours, finishing the London Marathon in 1:59:30.
- Sawe achieved this historic time wearing Adidas Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3 trainers, which weigh 97 grams and use innovative foam with carbon-plated soles to improve running economy by 1.6%.
- In second place, Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha and third-place finisher Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda also bested the 2:00:35 world record set by the late Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum at the Chicago Marathon in October 2023.
- Adidas shares rose 2% today, while Sawe expects to earn more than $1.4 million in bonuses. "The Adidas family is incredibly proud of Sabastian and Tigist's historic achievements," Patrick Nava, general manager at Adidas Running, said.
- The win boosts Adidas against rival Nike, whose 2017 Breaking2 attempt at Monza and Eliud Kipchoge's 2019 INEOS 1:59 Challenge fell outside official record books despite both runners finishing under two hours.
