ABU denies alleged secret nuclear weapon project
Ahmadu Bello University confirmed its nuclear research has been peaceful and compliant with international treaties, denying claims of secret weapons development in the 1980s.
- On Saturday, Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria dismissed as false a social media video alleging it helped develop a Nuclear Weapon for Nigeria, refuting the claims in a statement by Malam Auwalu Umar, Director, Public Affairs Directorate.
- The video claimed Nigerian scientists enriched weapons-grade uranium in Kaduna during the 1980s and obtained centrifuge equipment from the AQ Khan network, but Umar said the viral social media video was AI-generated and aimed at misinforming the public about Nigeria's peaceful nuclear energy programme.
- Training rosters and facility dates indicate most Centre for Energy Research and Training scientists trained abroad in the 1980s; by 1987, only a 14 MeV Neutron Generator operated, with NIRR-1 established in 1996.
- University management reiterated its commitment to advancing science for humanity and upholding NPT and Pelindaba Treaty obligations, stating CERT has never engaged in any secret weapons programme.
- Historically, Sir Ahmadu Bello's 1960 visit to the Museum of Atomic Energy at Oak Ridge National Laboratory showed early interest, and ABU has always pursued peaceful nuclear science for development.
