325 Narcan Doses, 43 Lost Children: DC National Guard Mission Wraps First Year
Leaders said troops have responded to 788 medical emergencies and made 479 law-enforcement assists as the mission nears its one-year mark.
Nearly one year after the National Guard's "Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful" mission began under President Donald Trump, leaders shared that about 9,700 troops have served in the nation's capital, with about 4,600 currently stationed in the District.
Criticism regarding the mission's cost and military presence on city streets prompted military officials to hold a roundtable on Monday to address public concerns and provide transparency about Trump's deployment.
Gen. Leland D. Blanchard II reported 788 medical emergencies, 325 Narcan administrations, and 479 law enforcement assists, emphasizing that "each of those represents fathers, mothers, children" who received emergency care or had lives saved.
Under a $292 million contract awarded in July, the Guard will transition troops from hotels into apartment-style housing, a move Blanchard said will cut housing costs in half and keep troops closer to mission areas.
Pentagon officials confirmed the National Guard will remain activated through Inauguration Day 2029, while Blanchard noted mission locations will shift in coming weeks to focus on higher-crime areas including Ward 8 and Trinidad.
