More than 100 people staged a Halloween-themed die-in to oppose federal moves they say would weaken pesticide oversight.
- On Saturday, more than 100 participants in Halloween costumes staged a die-in protest in front of Health Canada's offices in Montreal to demonstrate that "pesticides kill."
- Thibault Rehn, executive director of Vigilance OGM, organized the action to denounce "historic setbacks" by the Carney government, particularly legislation passed in June allowing cabinet to override Health Canada on banned pesticides.
- At the Guy-Favreau complex, participants created a symbolic "cemetery" with a cardboard coffin and tombstones bearing disease names, while children traced chalk outlines of victims on the ground.
- Similar demonstrations took place simultaneously across Quebec in Quebec City, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Terrebonne, Blainville, and Val-David, supported by groups including Union Paysanne and the Family Farmers' Network.
- Protesters specifically oppose Section 13 of Bill C-31, currently under consideration, which would amend the Pest Control Products Act to end the mandatory 15-year re-evaluation requirement for registered pesticides.
