Strong earthquake shakes central Japan, shattering store windows and injuring at least 22
Japan’s meteorological agency warned of strong aftershocks and landslides after the quake, which left at least 22 people injured, local media said.
A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Japan early Sunday, November 8, injuring at least 20 people in Aichi Prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The temblor originated in western Shizuoka Prefecture at a depth of about 40km, registering upper 5 intensity on the Japanese seismic intensity scale in Chita, Aichi Prefecture.
At least 20 people were injured in Aichi, while lower 5 intensity levels recorded in nearby Nagano and Gifu prefectures confirmed a wide impact area.
Government officials established a liaison office to coordinate the emergency response, and authorities confirmed there is no tsunami risk associated with the seismic activity.
Smaller aftershocks have followed the initial earthquake, with the Japan Meteorological Agency continuing to monitor the region as activity affects a wide area near Aichi Prefecture.
