One year after the tragedy, three central issues remain open: what exactly caused the accident, who could be held responsible and how much compensation will ultimately cost victims and families. Technical research has not yet been completed, the compensation proceedings are far from complete and Carris is preparing a new technological solution for the Glorious Elevator to be able to work again.
<p>Carlos Enes, a TVI journalist who has been following the case and the development of the investigation into the accident with the Glóriaz Elevator, stresses that the tragedy "could have been much worse" and "we could be lamenting many more victims today." </p>
André Marques was a guard and was 45 years old. In total, 16 people died and 24 were injured in the accident of 3 September 2025, which left the Portuguese capital in mourning.
It is now a year since the derailment of the Gloria lift in Lisbon. The investigation into the accident is still taking place, as is support for the families of the 16 fatal victims and 24 injured, with only four indemnity proceedings completed.
