Yves Klein’s patent International Klein Blue on his largest monochrome canvas sold for 18.4 million euros, marking a record for his works in France, Christie's said.

- Klein created the work shortly before his U.S. debut exhibitions; he painted California in early 1961, shortly before his only trip to the United States for shows in New York and Los Angeles.
- Measuring four metres across and nearly two metres high, California is the artist's largest monochrome in private hands, featuring small pebbles on its surface.
- Since 2005, the painting remained in a private collection in New York and was leased to the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 2005 to 2008, when it was last shown publicly.
- In market terms, a $22 million sponge sculpture by Klein fetched $22 million at Sotheby's in New York, breaking the auction record for his works, Klein patented the ultramarine hue known as International Klein Blue.
