Thailand Beat Singapore 3-1 in First Leg of ASEAN Football Championship Semi-Finals
Teerasak Poeiphimai scored twice and Thailand survived a saved penalty to take a two-goal cushion into the second leg.
Thailand defeated Singapore 3-1 in the first leg of their Asean Hyundai Cup semi-final on Saturday, August 15, at Jalan Besar Stadium, with forward Teerasak Poeiphimai scoring twice to position Anthony Hudson's side toward the final.
Singapore began with positive intensity but individual defensive errors allowed Teerasak to capitalize early, netting in the 14th minute before doubling the lead 12 minutes later.
Substitute Patrik Gustavsson set up Seksan Ratree for Thailand's third goal shortly after halftime, while goalkeeper Kampon Pathomakkakul saved a 35th-minute penalty from striker Shawal Anuar.
Late in the match, Singapore substitute Ilhan Fandi bent a shot into the net during the 84th minute, setting the stage for the second leg at Bangkok's Rajamangala Stadium on August 18.
Singapore, aiming for their first Asean Championship final in 14 years, faces steep historical odds; no team has progressed from a two-goal deficit in this knockout format.
