'A labour of love': Foundation plans memorial for B.C. hockey player
The foundation wants 30 to 45 donated sticks for a Christmas tree-shaped memorial and may make the sculpture a permanent tribute.
The Grant Gilbertson Memorial Foundation is seeking 30 to 45 used hockey sticks to build a Christmas tree-shaped memorial sculpture for display at SEAPARC Recreation Complex from Nov. 24 to Dec. 27.
Grant Gilbertson was 18 when he died following a crash on Sooke Road on Jan. 3, 2022, while driving to an evening practice with the Peninsula Panthers after playing 49 games over two seasons.
Darcie Colegrave, Gilbertson's mother, is collecting sticks for the sculpture, noting her son always helped teammates in need. "Well, can't we just get it for him?" Colegrave recalled him saying when someone lacked equipment.
The memorial will travel to North Saanich on Jan. 3 for the annual memorial game, where the Panthers will host the Saanich Predators at 7:30 p.m. at Panorama Recreation Centre.
Beginning in the coming year, an annual scholarship in Gilbertson's name will be awarded at Edward Milne Community School, with hockey coach Mark Barrie selecting recipients whose character reflects Gilbertson's qualities.
