A Fire Destroys Part of a Migrant Camp in the Spanish Enclave of Ceuta
Police are investigating a possible accident or negligence as the cause after 42 shacks burned and emergency crews contained the blaze in about two hours.
- On Friday September 11, a fire destroyed at least 40 tents and shacks at Las Naves Tarajal migrant settlement in Ceuta. Emergency crews contained the blaze within two hours, leaving around 200 families without shelter.
- Tensions in the seven-square-mile Spanish territory have escalated since around 80,000 migrants crossed from Morocco in July. Thousands remain in improvised settlements facing precarious conditions and growing safety concerns.
- The fire occurred during a wider night of unrest across Ceuta, where several vehicles and rubbish containers were set alight at the Virgen Industrial Estate and near the Flor Sports Complex. Police arrested a cleaning company employee in connection with those incidents.
- Residents fear the fire is linked to an earlier attack when hooded men threw stones and fired a pellet gun at tents. A six-year-old boy named Ali was seriously injured, and families reported receiving threats they would be burned.
- Investigators are working to determine the cause of the Las Naves fire, with police suggesting negligence or an accident as most likely. Families have rejected that theory, and police noted they have not established a link between this incident and the earlier attack.
