A fan-run soccer club pushes back against Poland’s nationalist stadium culture
The club fields men’s and women’s teams and welcomes LGBTQ+ and immigrant players as fans reject chants and hostility in the stands.
In Warsaw, the fan-run club Alternatywny Klub Sportowy Zly operates as an inclusive alternative to hostile, nationalist Polish stadium culture, welcoming all people regardless of sexual orientation, race, or nationality.
Juliusz Wrzosek, a former Legia fan, established the club after being marginalized for refusing to participate in hateful stadium chants, joined by supporters of rival club Polonia seeking democratic alternatives.
Former player Eliza Tran, 37, stresses the supportive community embraces LGBTQ and immigrant players while investing equally in male and female teams and covering academy costs for poorer families.
Coordinator Jan Dziubecki said fan culture in Poland has "drifted sharply to the right," with openly hateful slogans now common, making AKS Zly's democratic model essential for alienated supporters.
President Karol Nawrocki, backed by the Law and Justice party, maintains long-standing ties to Lechia GdaDsk; yet Dziubecki suggests this nationalist climate might paradoxically drive more fans toward AKS Zly's democratic alternative.
