Perot Museum Announces Major Outdoor Expansion Including Fire Tornado

The project has raised $135 million and will add interactive exhibits, green spaces and water features to the museum campus.

  • The Perot Museum of Nature and Science announced a $185 million campus transformation, replacing 4 acres of surface parking with a 60,000 square foot outdoor science center designed to inspire curiosity and connect visitors with nature.
  • Funded by the "Curiosity Unbound" capital campaign, the project has secured $135 million of its $185 million goal, leaving $50 million still needed to complete the expansion and related campus improvements.
  • The outdoor experience features about 25 large-scale exhibitions and 40 interactive features, including a fire tornado, mist maze, lightning pavilion, and a representation of the Tylosaurus rex, a newly discovered mosasaur species identified in North Texas earlier this year.
  • Annual attendance is expected to reach 1.4 million visitors, a 40 percent increase from current levels, once the Perot Museum opens the expansion in late 2028 following groundbreaking in early 2027.
  • Suzanne Perot McGee, campaign co-chair, described the project as a "bridge between science education and workforce opportunities" serving as a critical part of Dallas civic fabric amid rapid regional STEM job growth.
