A construction crew was demolishing a house – and uncovered a $10 million gold hoard
Police secured the site after workers found more than 40 gold bars and 4,000 coins, while prosecutors investigate the hoard’s origin.
Construction workers in Belgium discovered a massive hoard estimated at $10.5 million USD hidden within a cellar wall while renovating a building. The cache contained over 40 gold bars and 4,000 gold coins.
The structure, once a brewer's home around the turn of the 20th century, now houses the social welfare organization CAW Oost-Vlaanderen. The origin of the gold remains unexplained by building records.
"We stumbled across it while carrying out groundwork to lay a pipe for the sewerage system," worker Kobe told VRT. Police secured the items in a high-security government vault.
Police are guarding the fenced-off construction site following unauthorized break-in attempts. The prosecutor launched an investigation to determine whether criminal activity was involved in the hoard's concealment.
Belgian law provides a five-year window for rightful owners to claim the hoard, provided no criminal activity is confirmed. If unclaimed, CAW Oost-Vlaanderen and the construction workers could split the fortune.
