A Black Hawk carrying a school bus over Florida town had residents asking one question: Why?
The sheriff’s office says its dive team uses a submerged bus and dummies to train for underwater rescues and real-world emergencies.
On Friday, a Black Hawk helicopter transported a school bus over Babcock Ranch in the Punta Gorda, Florida, area, an unusual sight captured by WBBH cameras.
The CCSO dive team confirmed the activity was a training exercise; Charlotte County Sheriff personnel visit Babcock Ranch multiple times yearly, using submerged buses and dummies to practice underwater extractions.
Kelly Vokaty, who watched from her lanai, stated, "I heard the helicopter loud and clear." Richard Berlin-Velez added, "It's something that you don't see every day. But when you learn what's happening, you're amazed."
Vokaty expressed relief after learning the drill's purpose, stating, "We're just lucky to live in a community where we have the backdrop for them to learn what they need to do to save lives."
Berlin-Velez reflected on the initial shock, saying, "Had I seen that live, I would have just, like, totally been freaking out," underscoring how the CCSO drill maintains readiness for water-based rescue operations.
