Electricity Demand and Temperatures Hit Record Levels in B.C.

Environment Canada said 19 communities set or tied daily high records as a strong ridge of high pressure kept temperatures unusually warm.

  • On Monday, Vancouver shattered a 128-year-old temperature record, hitting 23.9°C and surpassing the 1898 benchmark of 22.2°C. The city was among 19 British Columbia communities setting new daily heat records.
  • Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon explained that a strong ridge of high pressure is driving temperatures five to 10 degrees above normal. He described the early May heat as "quite exceptional."
  • Records across the province included Pemberton at 31.5°C, breaking a 1957 record, and Lillooet at 31.2°C, surpassing a 1998 benchmark. Nanaimo also reached 29.1°C, breaking a 1980 record during the widespread heat.
  • The BC Wildfire Service warned Friday that it is anticipating increased activity amid the dry conditions, with 29 active wildfires currently burning. NewsRadio Meteorologist Michael Kuss expects temperatures to moderate later this week.
  • Over the next few weeks, temperatures are expected to return to seasonal norms, though Kuss notes conditions may remain unseasonably dry through May. Overnight lows are projected to stay above 10°C for the upcoming week.
