Belgium has to contend with one of the largest forest fires in its history. The flames spread further near the German border. First Belgian places are already evacuated. Now it could also meet residents in the North Rhine-Westphalian Monschau.
The North Rhine-Westphalian city of Monschau calls on residents to prepare for the possible evacuation. On the other side of the border, in the Belgian High Venn, about 1600 hectares burn.
At least 1650 hectares of forest burn in the High Venn. Two villages in Belgium were evacuated already on Saturday afternoon. Now on the German side Monschau calls on people to prepare for a possible evacuation and prepare emergency shelters.
Residents of the villages of Sourbrodt and Bütgenbach were ordered to evacuate around 4 p.m., according to a message issued by the local authorities.
