8 in 10 Americans Back Age Caps for Congress, Poll Finds
The poll found 83% support term limits and 80% support age caps, with backing spanning Democrats, Republicans and independents.
An overwhelming 8 in 10 Americans support setting age caps and term limits for members of Congress, according to the latest NPR/PBS News/Marist poll.
The current Congress is the third oldest in American history, with median ages of 58 in the House and 65 in the Senate, far exceeding the 42-year median age of the American workforce.
Support for term limits spans political identity: 89 percent of Republicans, 84 percent of independents, and 78 percent of Democrats favor the proposal.
The Supreme Court ruled in U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton that such restrictions require a constitutional amendment, which must be ratified by three-fourths of all states.
Representative Ralph Norman introduced a term-limits resolution in January 2025 with 113 co-sponsors, though Northeastern University professor Daniel Urman cautioned that Congress is unlikely to limit its own time in office.
