Minamata marks 70th anniv. of recognition of mercury-poisoning disease
A southwestern Japan city on Friday marked the 70th anniversary of the official recognition of the Minamata mercury-poisoning disease, with many aging victims still seeking relief over one of the country's worst industrial pollution disasters.
At the memorial service for the victims of Minamata disease, Environment Minister Hirotaka Ishihara stated, "On behalf of the government, I once again apologize for our failure to prevent the spread of Minamata disease."
