6-Year-Old Fossil Hunter Makes Rare Discovery in Nebraska
Local geologists say the fossil is the first of its kind found in Nebraska in more than 55 years.
Six-Year-Old Leo Youngdahl discovered a rare conulariid fossil at Schramm Park State Recreation Area this summer, marking the first such specimen found in Nebraska in more than 55 years.
According to Nebraska Game and Parks, conulariids are ancient marine animals that inhabited eastern Nebraska 200 million to 500 million years ago but are rarely preserved due to their soft bodies.
Schramm Education Center outdoor education specialist Kelly Ekue identified the specimen as 'fish-like' and distinct from common local fossils, while Leo initially thought it resembled 'an upside-down snake shed.'
Staff at Schramm Park are using the fossil to educate children, with Ekue stating, 'Certainly for Nebraska history, it's important that we've found one,' as the last record dated to the 1970s.
Collecting rocks since he was a baby, Leo remains eager to uncover more discoveries, advising others to look for rocks with 'nooks and crannies' to find fossils, agates, and gemstones.
