Five Malaysians Held in Japan over RM3.1mil Cocaine Haul Hidden in Shoes
Police said the suspects carried about 5 kg of cocaine worth $757,300 and were believed to have been recruited by a smuggling ring.
On Friday and Saturday, Japanese authorities arrested five Malaysian nationals at Haneda Airport for smuggling approximately 5kg of cocaine worth ¥120 million hidden beneath their shoe insoles.
Customs officers grew suspicious after noticing one suspect wore shoes with unusually thick soles, prompting inspection that revealed cocaine hidden beneath the insoles of all five individuals, each allegedly carrying about 1kg.
Tokyo Metropolitan Police suspect a Malaysia-based criminal syndicate recruited the group; suspect Mohamad Danial Farhan Abdul Rahman claimed a Telegram contact offered him RM8,000 to transport the drugs overseas.
Four of the suspects admitted to the smuggling allegations during questioning, while a 25-year-old woman denied the charges, claiming she was unaware that the packages contained cocaine.
Heightened discourse on airport security follows previous drug trafficking arrests involving Malaysians in Indonesia; Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail's ministry implemented stricter physical checks on passengers and baggage for high-risk flights departing KLIA.
