45 years later, a long-lost infant's body was found
After decades of searching, Hastings learned her infant son was buried in a common donor grave, and she is raising money for a headstone.
After 45 years, Dana Hastings, 64, located her son Abraham Joseph's burial site at Rochester's Oakwood Cemetery, discovering he was interred in a research donor plot rather than the expected infant section.
Following the 1981 death of her son at the Mayo Clinic, then 19-year-old Hastings believed Abraham was buried in the 'Isle of the Innocence,' but she found no record of him when visiting two years later.
Records indicate Abraham was placed in Section 13, a group burial site for medical research donors between 1917 and 1985; Hastings said she and her relative never provided permission for his body to be used for anatomical studies.
Staff at the Mayo Clinic's Office of Decedent Affairs confirmed his location after Hastings moved back to Rochester this year, prompting her to state, 'Oh my God, I can't believe it!'
To commemorate Abraham's life, Hastings is raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign titled 'A Stone for My Son's Resting Place' to secure a permanent headstone at the site.
