Boat with around 270 people on board capsizes off North Cyprus, media says
Rescuers saved 172 people as search teams continued to look for missing passengers after the catamaran overturned, officials said.
- On Sunday, the ferry Filo Jet capsized off Northern Cyprus, killing at least seven people among the 259 passengers and eight crew members aboard.
- Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Unal Ustel stated the ferry faced adverse weather conditions and began taking in water about 7.5km off the coast, just 15 minutes after departing Kyrenia for Tasucu, Turkey.
- Four coastguard vessels and two helicopters participated in rescue operations near Diana beach, according to the Interior Ministry, while 237 people were rescued and search efforts continued for 23 others.
- Survivors were transferred to local hospitals as Kyrenia Mayor Murat Senkul confirmed the ship belonged to Filo Denizcilik. Numan Kurtulmus, speaker of the Turkish parliament, called the event "this exceedingly tragic incident."
- The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized only by Turkey, controls the northern third of the island, which has been divided since 1974 and provides the geopolitical context for the region where the ferry departed.
