23 fishermen rescued when ice shelf broke from Georgian Bay shore: police
Record warmth and rain caused the ice shelf to break and drift two kilometres, leading to a life-threatening rescue of 23 fishermen with minor injuries, police said.
- On Sunday, Ontario Provincial Police reported 23 people were rescued after an ice shelf in Georgian Bay separated from shore, with all airlifted back by approximately 2:30 p.m.
- Winds and current moved the ice shelf approximately two kilometres from shore, splitting it into sections and causing partial submersion near Balmy Beach, north of Owen Sound, Ont.
