20K+ Pounds of 'High-Explosives' Detonated in Deadly Blast at Tennessee Plant, Officials Say

The explosion at Accurate Energetic Systems involved over 20,000 pounds of explosives and killed 16 people aged 21 to 60, prompting a lawsuit alleging unsafe factory conditions.

  • On Oct. 10, a massive explosion at the Accurate Energetic Systems factory in Bucksnort killed 16 people and leveled the building, with the blast felt more than 32 kilometers away.
  • ATF special agent Brice McCracken said the blast began in first floor production boilers used to make cast propellants, then spread to other explosives stored on the main floor.
  • Authorities say the blast involved between 24,000 and 28,000 pounds of explosives, and investigators searched an area of approximately 500 acres, finding items of interest more than a half-mile away.
  • Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced 14 victims have been positively identified through rapid DNA testing, while two remains are not yet identified and testing continues.
  • Last week a lawsuit was filed on behalf of Jeremy Moore’s 9-year-old daughter naming AAC Investments LLC, linked to Accurate Energetic Systems, which declined to comment; Accurate Energetic Systems holds contracts with the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.
