2026 State of the Climate Report Shows a Planet Reaching Its Limits
The report says 7 of 16 planetary vital signs are at record extremes, while renewable energy growth is still not reducing fossil fuel use fast enough.
- On Wednesday, researchers published a report in BioScience indicating Earth is undergoing "rapid destabilization," with seven of 16 tracked "planetary vital signs" reaching "record extremes."
- Humanity continues relying on fossil fuels as the dominant energy source, pushing atmospheric carbon dioxide 50 percent higher than preindustrial levels and accelerating warming to 0.36 degrees Celsius per decade since 2010.
- Scientists warn accelerating trends raise the risk of Earth breaching "tipping points," such as mass coral die-offs if warming exceeds 1.5 degrees Celsius or Amazon forest degradation.
- Since September 2025, humans have faced immediate danger from widespread climate-fueled disasters, including heatwaves in Europe, India, and Florida, plus wildfires in Australia.
- While renewable energy surpassed coal in 2025, marking an "important turning point," coauthor William Ripple warns that current progress remains insufficient, stating, "The climate emergency is not something waiting for us in the future.

Madrid, 14 Oct (EFE).- Seven of the 16 vital signs for the ‘health’ of the planet are in an alarming state, and although some of the other 9 show an improvement, it has to be more forceful, warns the report “The state of the climate 2026”, which collects the magazine BioScience. 2026 State of the Climate Report Shows a Planet Reaching Its Limits
The seventh edition of an annual report analyzing Earth’s "planetary vital signs” indicates that Earth systems are rapidly destabilizing, some at an accelerating rate. The report, published today in BioScience, analyzed 16 of these signs, including greenhouse gas emissions levels, ocean heat content and acidity, the mass of major ice sheets, the number of hot days, Earth's surface temperature, and more.
