2024 solar storm triggered ultrarelativistic electrons inside Earth's 'impenetrable barrier'

Researchers say chorus waves boosted electrons to 5,000 times normal levels inside the Van Allen belts during the storm peak.

Summary by Phys.org
The Earth is surrounded by an invisible barrier that was thought to prevent highly energetic electrons from reaching closer to our planet. But in 2024, Japan's Arase space probe detected these electrons well inside the barrier. Now, research led by Nagoya University has found evidence that the electrons were accelerated locally rather than infiltrating from outer radiation belts.

Scientists thought that a natural barrier around the Earth prevented super-energy electrons from reaching areas close to it. But an extraordinary solar storm revealed a bigger surprise than just breaking into the barrier.

After the 2024 solar superstorm, the number of ultra-relativistic electrons behind the protective shield around the Earth has increased by about 5,000 times compared to the usual background level.
