The 2024 Prix Goncourt, France’s top literary prize, was awarded Monday to French-Algerian writer Kamel Daoud for his novel “Houris” (ed. Gallimard) that looks back at the Algerian Civil War in the 1990s. Executive Director at the American Library in Paris' Audrey Chapuis tells us more.

'Houris', published by Gallimard, was considered the favorite of the four finalists for the prize, not only for literary reasons, but also for political reasons. In this novel, the 54-year-old French-Algerian writer and journalist plays Aube, a pregnant young woman who tells her unborn granddaughter about the massacre of her family on December 31, 1999, by Islamists who tried to cut her throat, leaving her disfigured and mute.
