2 rescued from Longs Peak summit in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park

Two climbers stranded near 14,000 feet on Longs Peak were rescued by a Colorado National Guard Chinook after high winds grounded other helicopters, with no injuries reported.

  • On Feb. 7, 2026 a Colorado National Guard Chinook helicopter landed on Longs Peak's summit at about 2:15 p.m. and flew two men rescued from Kiener's Route to Upper Beaver Meadows Road, Rocky Mountain National Park.
  • On Feb. 7, 2026, two male climbers on Kiener's Route, near 14,000 feet, reported they were incapacitated and had not planned to stay overnight.
  • Officials requested help from the Colorado National Guard at Buckley, while RMNP and Larimer County search-and-rescue teams hiked toward Longs Peak overnight.
  • The park reported no injuries and said visitors should plan for ice, snow, high winds and subzero temperatures, as winter conditions can persist in the high country, officials warned.
  • High winds limited air operations, forcing a U.S. Forest Service helicopter and a Flight For Life helicopter to abort Saturday, complicating rescue and requiring larger specialized resources.
