19-year-old wins county clerk election for nation's 4th-largest county

The Arizona State University student defeated former state senator Jeff Dial after a Republican hold on the office that lasted for decades.

  • On Wednesday, 19-year-old Arizona State University student Sebastian Matta won the Maricopa County Clerk election, becoming one of the youngest people ever elected to a countywide office in Arizona.
  • To secure his ballot spot, Matta collected 4,063 signatures and raised $20,000 from nine different states while driving nearly 30,000 miles across 25 legislative districts in Maricopa County.
  • The Democrat defeated Republican Jeff Dial, a former state senator, in a race contributing to a historic Democratic wave seen by many as a rebuke of President Donald Trump's agenda over his past two years in office.
  • Matta plans to build a foundation before implementing campaign changes, telling staff, "I don't plan on instituting some of my campaign changes for a couple of months, even a year in." He emphasized reassuring employees their jobs are secure.
  • The clerk-elect aims to make the office more accessible by increasing staff interpreters for residents who speak less common languages in Maricopa County, including Urdu, Haitian Creole, and Korean.
