Record Heat Threatens July 4 Weekend Across Eastern US
Officials said the heat wave may have contributed to 19 deaths as record temperatures and storms disrupted power across the region.
State Health Commissioner Dr. Raynard Washington reported that New Jersey officials linked 19 deaths to extreme heat over the weekend, with the confirmed toll reaching at least 24 across multiple states including Illinois and Mississippi.
A weather phenomenon called a 'heat dome' trapped heat and humidity over the region; climate scientist Jennifer Francis of the Woodwell Climate Research Center said "the air in this region is so warm" that atmospheric layers bulged upward.
Record-Breaking temperatures plagued the region, with Atlantic City reaching 106 F on Saturday and Trenton hitting 101 F, breaking a record set in 1901. Washington, D.C., and Raleigh, North Carolina, both reached 103 F.
Severe storms moved in on Sunday, bringing relief but also power outages affecting nearly one million customers; over 223,000 lost electricity in Michigan, while 170,000 in Pennsylvania experienced weekend blackouts.
Forecasters expect the heat dome to shift south and west by midweek, offering relief to the Northeast; health officials in affected states will continue reviewing death counts, a process typically requiring weeks to finalize.
