17 people died while hiking, climbing in B.C. in 2025
Most deaths were accidental, and falls were the leading cause, the B.C. Coroners Service said in a 10-year review of hiking and climbing fatalities.
- The B.C. Coroners Service released the "Hiking/Climbing Related Deaths in BC, 2016-2025" report on Thursday, documenting that 17 people died while hiking or climbing in 2025.
- Over the 10-year period, approximately 24 deaths occurred annually, totaling 143; the report says 81 per cent were classified as accidental and 17 per cent as natural causes.
- Males accounted for 73 per cent of deaths between Jan. 1, 2016 and Dec. 31, 2025, while people aged 19 to 29 represented 29 per cent, the largest age group.
- Vancouver Coastal and Interior health regions recorded the highest hiking and climbing deaths with 49 and 47 respectively, while the North Shore and Coast Garibaldi had 47 from 2016-2025.
- Most deaths occurred between May and September annually, peaking in July. The Salmon Arm RCMP and Shuswap Search and Rescue responded to a hiking fatality on Bastion Mountain April 21.
