16 midterm races are within 1%. What could happen next?
With 95% of votes counted, 16 contests are within 1% nationwide, and Mississippi’s Senate race leads by 65 votes, AP reported.
In the closest 2026 midterm contest, Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom leads incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith by just 65 votes as of Wednesday afternoon, with 96% of the votes counted.
Working with the Get the Facts Data Team, the Hearst National Investigative Unit reviewed races where 95% of the votes have been counted and found 16 contests separated by 1% or less.
Close contests span several states: Florida has five House races with margins between 0.4% and 0.8%, while Minnesota's race between Jake Johnson and Brad Finstad shows a 0.1% margin with just under 350 votes separating them.
Pamela Smith, president and CEO of Verified Voting, said a narrow result is not evidence of a counting problem, stating "An audit is something that happens every election as a matter of course."
Election officials must complete the canvass before certifying results, though Mississippi does not have a standard recount process; voters can consult the Audit Law Database and Recount Law Database for state-specific rules.
