13-Year-Old Boy in Orange County Dies After Losing Control of E-Motorcycle
Investigators said the boy was traveling about 35 mph when he struck the center median and was ejected from the electric motorcycle.
On Thursday night, a 13-year-old Santa Ana boy died after losing control of an electric motorcycle near Magnolia Street and Larson Avenue in Garden Grove at approximately 9:50 p.m. Garden Grove Police Department officers found him unconscious after he struck a center median.
Lacking pedals, the e-motorcycle was not street-legal, police confirmed. Officials emphasized the vehicle was more comparable to a dirt bike than an e-bike, which are regulated differently under California state law.
Investigators determined the teen was traveling about 35 mph on Magnolia Street when he hit the median and was ejected. Police stated, "For unknown reasons, the rider collided with the center median, causing him to lose control of the electric motorcycle."
Garden Grove police are seeking witnesses to the crash and urging anyone with surveillance or dashcam footage to contact Investigator Lang. The Garden Grove Unified School District has made counselors available to students following the incident.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer has increasingly filed charges against parents whose children are involved in e-motorcycle crashes, describing the rise of illegal, high-speed electric bikes as a "pandemic" requiring stricter parental accountability.
